Red Sand Beach Maui is real and it is a judgment call in 2026. Kaihalulu is a deep red cinder cove on the back side of Hana, carved into the hill where a Hawaiian queen was born, and reached by a crumbling little path with opinions about your footwear. The cove is spectacular, the decision is the hard part, and this guide covers both honestly.

What makes Red Sand Beach Maui special

Red Sand Beach Maui sits at the base of Kauiki (Kaʻuiki) Head, an iron rich cinder cone on the east tip of the island that has spent centuries oxidizing. The hill behind the beach is literally rusting, which sounds like a maintenance problem and is actually the attraction. The crumbling cone feeds the cove deep red cinder that spills onto the sand, so the beach keeps its color the way a working bakery keeps its smell, and the cove is wider now than a generation ago, the rare beach that grows.

The beach itself is quite small, and the sand runs closer to red gravel than powder, so sandals are enough once you are down. Against rust colored cliffs the water reads an unreasonable shade of blue, behind a jagged black lava rock wall that works like a moat.

Kaihalulu Beach is one of the strangest entries on any best beaches in Maui list, one of the only genuinely red beaches in the islands, and photographers travel a long way for exactly this color combination. Mornings at Kaihalulu bring calm water, red cliffs, less company, and easier parking, so go at first light on a dry day, before the cove picks up its company.

This is also serious ground. Queen Kaahumanu (Kaʻahumanu), later the kingdom's most powerful woman, was born in a cave on this cinder cone in 1768, a copper plaque placed in 1928 marks the spot, and Kauiki held a fortress that decided battles for Hana.

Can you visit Red Sand Beach in 2026

There is no official closure of Kaihalulu on county or state books as of 2026, checked July, and people still walk down. The full answer takes a minute.

The trail crosses private land, and the posted signs are blunt. The trail is dangerous, there have been numerous injuries and fatalities, and the landowner is not liable.

One guidebook called the area officially closed after the March 2026 Kona storms, but the county's own storm recovery pages never list Kaihalulu, and a January 2026 walkthrough shows the trail open with fresh collapse damage. Sections of this path have closed and reopened repeatedly since 2023, usually after heavy rain.

The heavier weight is the community. Since March 2024 the East Maui Ready leadership has asked visitors to skip Kaihalulu, and the advisory says it plainly, please consider the impacts. It cites landslides, private land, and rescue strain in a district running one ambulance for 40 miles of coast.

Hana residents are not unanimous, but one lifelong resident said it flat in 2024, the trail is pretty much gone and rescues put first responders at risk. The county is still digging out from $100 million in Kona Low storm damage, and locals are famously reluctant to hand out directions here.

Understand the ask, then decide whether the reward is worth it to you, visiting Kaihalulu is a choice, and it is not a beach for everyone. For current information on the day you travel, ask at Hasegawa General Store in Hana town, they know more than any website, including this one.

The Kaihalulu trail and where to park

The Red Sand Beach trail is located at the end of Uakea Road, past the Hana Community Center and through a yellow gate. The distance is a short quarter mile each way, easy on paper, slower than you think.

Where the ironwood trees open into a clearing along the way, take the right fork, the left fork heads toward an old Japanese cemetery on the worst dirt line of the hill. The path follows a ridge above the water, loose cinder rolls underfoot, and the narrow middle section puts a rust wall on one side and a cliff edge on the other. The footing gets worse every winter, and the cinder turns slippery long before it looks wet.

Since 2012 at least a dozen falls here have ended in serious injuries, most needing helicopter evacuation, and a swimmer drowned off the cove in 2019. One fall can end the trip.

The effort is modest, the exposure is not. Wear real closed toe hiking shoes, bring water, leave kids out, and drop the idea after rain.

Turn onto Uakea Road and you find no lot, the citations come with enthusiasm. Use the free community lot across from the basketball court on Hauoli Road, by the Hana Maui Resort hotel, or at Hana Bay Beach Park, five minutes on foot along Uakea Road. Public bathrooms sit by the ballfield.

Swimming at Red Sand Beach Maui

The black lava rock wall knocks down most of the open ocean, and on a flat morning the sheltered side becomes a calm pool with fish along the rocks, and you might share it with a turtle. Stay inside the wall, a fast rip runs out the northern gap and it has taken swimmers before, there are no lifeguards, and help is a steep scramble away. When the surf is up, it is a beach to look at, not enter.

The smarter red sand plan

Our standing opinion, the classic Road to Hana mistake is the 12 stop itinerary with its trunk of half seen waterfalls. Kaihalulu deserves a decision, not a squeeze between stops seven and nine. Make it the first stop of the day or the last idea you drop.

Most travelers come here deep into a Road to Hana day, 620 curves and 59 bridges over 52 miles, the signature Hana Maui adventure. Driving it yourself, a narrated audio tour keeps the mile markers straight and your eyes on the road.

If the trail is not your kind of bet, the red sand experience has a sibling ten minutes up the road. Waianapanapa State Park trades red for jet black, adds sea caves, a blowhole, and camping, and swaps the short scramble for paved paths and a reservation system that costs a non resident $5 a person plus $10 to park. The deal is simple, the paid version beats the free one here.

Then let Hana carry the day's other adventures. Hana Bay is the calm family swim two minutes from the trailhead, the highway banana bread stands handle morale, and the drive home wants daylight.
