Why Kailua Is Oahu's Most Beautiful Daytime Picnic
Ko Olina owns the sunset. Waikiki owns the icon. Kailua owns the pure, natural beauty that makes people stop mid-sentence and just look. It's the side of Oahu that reminds you why Hawaii is called paradise.
Consistently Rated One of the Best Beaches in the US
Kailua Beach Park's 2.5-mile crescent of powdery white sand and turquoise water has earned its place in nearly every "best beach in America" ranking for decades. The water is calm, clear, and warm year-round. The shorebreak is gentle. There's room to breathe. It is, in every measurable way, exceptional.
The Ko'olau Mountains — Nature's Backdrop
The dramatic green ridgeline of the Ko'olau Mountains rises directly behind Kailua Beach, creating a backdrop that no other Oahu beach location can match. Jade-green, jagged, often mist-capped — the mountains give every photo taken here a layered, painterly depth that Instagram filters only approximate.
The Mokulua Islands — Hawaii's Most Postcard-Perfect View
The twin "Mokes" sit just offshore, rising from the turquoise water like something out of a South Pacific dream. They're visible from the beach the entire time, hovering in the water and framing the eastern view of any picnic setup. No other Oahu beach has offshore islands this close and this beautiful.
Natural Ironwood Shade — Rare and Valuable
Kailua Beach Park is lined with native ironwood trees — dense, feathery, and casting exactly the kind of dappled, moving shade that makes a long afternoon on the beach genuinely comfortable rather than punishing. Real shade is rare on Hawaiian beaches. Kailua has it in abundance.
A Genuine Local Town — Not a Tourist Strip
Kailua town is five minutes from the beach — and it's one of Oahu's most beloved communities. Independent restaurants, a legendary market (Kalapawai), boutique shops, the island's best shave ice (Island Snow), and a farmers market on Thursdays. Kailua feels like the Hawaii people move here for, not the one built for visitors.
Less Crowded Than the South Shore — By a Significant Margin
Kailua receives dramatically fewer visitors than Waikiki, Ko Olina, or the North Shore, despite being objectively as beautiful as any of them. Weekday mornings here feel like a private beach. Even summer weekends are manageable. The windward location keeps the tourist-to-local ratio far more balanced than anywhere south of the Ko'olau range.
Kailua Area Picnic Locations
The Kailua area has three distinct beach settings — each with its own character and best use case. We know exactly which one suits your occasion.
The crown jewel of windward Oahu picnicking. A broad crescent of powdery white sand with ironwood trees providing natural shade, picnic tables, restrooms, lifeguards, and ample parking. The Ko'olau Mountains rise dramatically to the west; the Mokulua Islands float offshore to the east. Wide enough that even busy weekend afternoons give you genuine breathing room.
This is our standard Kailua setup location — the combination of facilities, space, shade, and visual splendor makes it ideal for every occasion type from intimate couples to large group celebrations.
A half-mile of impossibly white sand, turquoise-to-sapphire water, and the twin Mokulua Islands perfectly framed offshore. Lanikai is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the United States — and with no facilities, limited parking, and a residential neighborhood layout, it's also the most intimate of the three windward options.
We coordinate Lanikai area setups for small groups (typically 2–6 people) who prioritize pure visual beauty over amenities. Parking is in the residential streets off Mokulua Drive. Early morning arrival (before 9 a.m. on weekdays) is essential for the best experience and parking.
Kalama Beach Park sits at the northern end of Kailua Bay — quieter than the main beach park, favored by local kite surfers, and offering a wide open stretch of sand with picnic facilities and the same stunning mountain and Mokulua Islands views. When Kailua Beach Park is at its busiest on summer weekends, Kalama provides a more relaxed windward alternative just a short walk away.

Before & After Your Kailua Picnic
Kailua town has some of Oahu's finest independent food culture — five minutes from the beach and entirely worth a long, unhurried visit.
Kalapawai Market
A local institution since 1932 — right at the beach and in Kailua town. Gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads, excellent cold brew, local snacks, and a curated wine selection. The turkey pesto sandwich is legendary. The perfect pre-picnic food stop.
The Hibachi
Kailua's most beloved poke counter — the hamachi, spicy Thai peanut, and salmon are consistently outstanding. Fresh daily, generous portions, and enough variety for the most discerning picnic food spread.
Cinnamon's Restaurant
Famous for their red velvet pancakes and guava chiffon pancakes — a beloved Kailua breakfast institution since 1985. The perfect morning stop before a full day at Kailua Beach. Arrive early; waits are long on weekends.
Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop
Kailua's legendary malasadas — Portuguese fried doughnuts that have been a local obsession for decades. The li hing mui and original sugar varieties are the ones to bring to your picnic. Worth the detour entirely.
Island Snow
Kailua's iconic shave ice spot — regularly visited by the Obama family during their annual Hawaii holidays. The lilikoi, coconut, and rainbow flavors are classics. The perfect dessert to add to any Kailua picnic package.
Kailua Town Farmers Market
Every Thursday evening, Kailua town comes alive with local vendors selling fresh tropical fruit, prepared foods, flowers, and Hawaiian crafts. If your picnic falls on a Thursday, this is the best pre-picnic stop on the island.
